To find an average grade, add every score and divide by the number of scores. Four grades of 88, 92, 79 and 95 average to 88.5%, which is a B+ on the standard US scale.
Average grade vs. weighted grade
A plain average treats every score as equal. Most courses do not work that way: homework might be 20% of the grade, quizzes 30%, and the final exam 50%. In that setup a low exam score moves the grade far more than a low homework score, so an average can flatter a grade that is really lower. Use the gradebook calculator when the syllabus lists category weights, and a plain average when every assignment is worth the same.
How to raise an average grade
The fastest way to lift an average depends on how many scores are already counted. With only a few grades, a single strong result moves the average a lot; late in the term the same result barely shifts it. Two practical steps: find the score you need on the next test with the grade calculator, and check whether the course uses weighted or unweighted grading before deciding where to put your effort.
Turning an average into a letter grade
On the standard US scale an average of 90% or above is an A−, 80–89% is a B, 70–79% is a C, 60–69% is a D, and anything below 60% is an F. Many schools use a different scale, so confirm the thresholds with the grading scale reference. To convert an average into grade points, see the GPA calculator.
