How to Convert a Rubric or Standards-Based Score to a Grade

Why 3 out of 4 feels too low, and how to fix it

Rubric level to percentage: conversion table

This table shows every level score on a 4-point rubric, converted both ways. Naive is points divided by the maximum. Floored at 60% rescales the lowest level to 60%. The rescale formula for any rubric

For a rubric size that is not in the table, or a multi-criterion rubric, use this: grade % = min + (earned − min possible) ÷ (max possible − min possible) × (100 − min). Here min is the percentage you want the lowest level to equal, usually 60; min possible is the total when every criterion sits at level 1, which equals the number of criteria; max possible is levels times criteria; and earned is the student's total.

Worked example: a four-criterion, 4-point rubric where the student earns 9 points. The maximum is 16, the minimum possible is 4, and with a 60% floor the grade is 60 + (9 − 4) ÷ (16 − 4) × 40 ≈ 77%. The basic method would have given 9 ÷ 16 = 56%, a fail for work that scored above the lowest level on every criterion. Half-levels such as 3.5 work in the same formula.

Weighting criteria that don't count equally

Adding raw level scores treats every criterion as equally important, which is rarely true. A first draft might value ideas and organization far more than mechanics; a lab report might weight analysis over formatting. To weight, give each criterion a point value that reflects its emphasis, convert each criterion's level to a percentage of its points, and total them.

Worked example: a rubric with Thesis worth 20 points, Evidence 40, Organization 20, and Mechanics 20, for 100 total. A student scores 3 out of 4 on Thesis, 4 out of 4 on Evidence, 3 out of 4 on Organization, and 2 out of 4 on Mechanics. That is 0.75 × 20 + 1.0 × 40 + 0.75 × 20 + 0.5 × 20 = 80 points, an 80%. Converting standards-based (1 to 4) scores

Standards-based grading reports mastery of specific standards on a small scale — commonly 1 for not at mastery up to 4 for mastery — and turning that into a traditional letter is a local decision with two common approaches. The percentage method treats the standard scores like rubric points: add the points earned across standards, divide by the total possible, and read the percentage off a normal scale, so a student at 34 out of 40 standard points is at 85%, a B.

The Marzano method averages the standard scores and maps the average straight to a letter with a fixed chart — a common version is 4.0 = A, 3.5 = A−/B+, 3.0 = B, 2.5 = C+, 2.0 = C, 1.5 = D, and below 1.5 = F.
